Skylights allow natural light in areas where windows normally wouldn’t fit. Just like your windows, your skylights will eventually need to be replaced. Today, roof repair and installation contractor Universal Roofing & Exteriors discusses the signs that your skylights are at the end of their service life.
Leaks
If your skylights appear to be leaking, take a closer look. Often, the “leaks” are caused by indoor condensation, which actually indicates that your skylights are working. If this is the case, you will need to address indoor humidity levels by using a humidifier/dehumidifier system.
If your skylights appear to be leaking from the edges, it is possible that you have a roofing problem. Have a roofing professional inspect your roof before hiring a skylight contractor. Better yet, hire a roofing contractor that also offers skylight replacement services, so you don’t have to seek another contractor.
Discoloration
Skylights are typically equipped with the same double-pane glass as most energy-efficient replacement windows. While most skylight glass isn’t susceptible to stains, particularly if it features coating that prevents water spotting, discoloration may still occur if the seal around the window glass is broken. Some double-pane glass assemblies are filled with an insulating gas fill. When it leaks, it turns the glass to a shade of yellow to light brown. Not only is this unsightly, but it will compromise the energy efficiency of the skylight.
Cracks
Older skylights may be equipped with glass that’s not tempered for temperature changes, and therefore will crack over time. Hailstones and dangling tree branches can also cause major cracks in the skylight. In either case, the glass needs to be replaced, not only because of the potential heat loss (and higher energy bills), but because of the potential hazard. In addition to falling glass, it may also create a fall hazard for anyone who may be working on your rooftop. If you notice cracks in the skylight, contact your skylight contractor for repairs or replacement, and keep the area clear in the meantime.
